Sukku Malli: The South Indian Drink We Wanted the World to Discover

Sukku Malli: The South Indian Drink We Wanted the World to Discover

Some ideas begin in a boardroom. Others begin with a cup of something familiar, served at the end of a meal.

For TeaFit, our instant Sukku Malli powder began with a little of both: a growing belief that traditional Indian beverages deserve a place in the modern world, and an experience in Chennai that brought one of those traditions into focus.

We spend a lot of time talking about what people drink today. Coffee has its global culture, matcha has found a new generation of fans, and packaged beverages have become part of everyday life. But India has its own extraordinary repertoire of drinks, many of which have been prepared in homes and local establishments for generations.

Some are well known across the country. Others remain deeply rooted in the regions they come from.

Sukku Malli belongs to the latter category.

A Chennai visit and a familiar cup

The inspiration came during the founder's travels to Chennai. At a local restaurant, a traditional spiced drink called chukku kaapi was served after a meal. It was a small moment, but it brought a larger idea into focus.

What if more people could discover traditional Indian drinks like this without having to travel to the places where they are traditionally enjoyed?

In South India, Sukku Malli is a familiar part of the beverage culture. This traditional South Indian beverage alternative is associated with a distinctive blend of spices, including dry ginger and coriander, and has traditionally been prepared in homes as a comforting option over everyday tea and coffee.

For many people who grew up with it, there is nothing particularly novel about Sukku Malli. It is simply something they know.

But familiarity can sometimes make regional traditions invisible beyond their own communities. A drink that is an everyday favourite in one part of India might be almost unknown in another.

That gap was precisely what interested us.

At TeaFit, we believe India has a rich heritage of beverages waiting to be rediscovered through our healthy tea premixes. Our goal is not to follow every passing trend or turn every traditional recipe into a product. We look for drinks that align with our philosophy, have a meaningful place in their culinary culture, and have the potential to be enjoyed by more people.

Sukku Malli felt like a natural fit.

Bringing a traditional recipe into a modern routine

One of the challenges of working with traditional beverages is that their appeal often comes from the very things that make them different.

The ingredients, spice balance and preparation methods have evolved through regional food cultures. Simplifying a recipe too aggressively can take away from the experience that makes it worth preserving in the first place.

At the same time, today's customers are looking for convenience. They want to enjoy a familiar drink without necessarily having to source individual ingredients or prepare a fresh spice blend every time.

That is where formulation becomes important.

For us, developing our Sukku Malli premix was about finding a way to make a traditional South Indian beverage more accessible while respecting the character of the original recipe. It also aligned with a broader ambition: to work with Indian ingredients and explore beverage formulations rooted in India's own culinary traditions.

The Chennai inspiration was one of the first steps in that direction. There are many more regional beverages worth exploring, and we see our instant Sukku Malli powder as part of a larger journey rather than an isolated product launch.

The palm jaggery question

There is one ingredient in Sukku Malli that deserves an honest conversation: palm jaggery.

TeaFit began with a clear intention to make sugar-free instant tea and beverages without unnecessary sugar. That commitment has guided our decisions over the years, and we do not take it lightly.

So why include palm jaggery in a product when sugar reduction is such an important part of our philosophy?

The answer lies in understanding the recipe itself.

Palm jaggery has a place in traditional preparations, including recipes valued for their distinctive combination of spices and sweetness. In our Sukku Malli premix, it contributes to the overall flavour profile, helping balance the strength of the spices. Removing it is not necessarily a neutral change; it can alter the character and drinking experience of the beverage.

We had to consider whether changing that ingredient would still give people the kind of Sukku Malli we wanted to introduce.

We also had to be honest about what palm jaggery is.

Jaggery may be perceived as a more traditional alternative to refined sugar, but it still contains sugar, and the body processes those sugars as sugar. Calling it traditional does not make that fact disappear.

That is why transparency matters to us.

We do not want customers to choose a product based on an incomplete impression of what is inside it. Nor do we believe that a traditional ingredient should automatically be presented as suitable for everyone.

Our responsibility is to tell customers what they are drinking so they can decide what works for them.

Sukku Malli is a reminder that building a thoughtful healthy tea premix range sometimes means navigating a more nuanced question than whether a product fits a single category. It means understanding the recipe, respecting its origins, and being clear about the ingredients.

Our commitment to transparency does not change when the answer is less straightforward.

India's beverage heritage has more stories to tell

It is easy to assume that innovation in beverages must mean borrowing the next big thing from somewhere else. But there is also considerable room to look closer to home.

Across India, families and communities have their own ways of preparing drinks for different occasions, seasons and everyday rituals. Many of these traditions are so deeply embedded in local life that they rarely need an explanation within their own communities.

Beyond them, however, there are people who have never tasted these traditional Indian beverages or heard their names.

We would like to help change that.

Sukku Malli is one expression of this ambition: a regional beverage that inspired us during a visit to Chennai and encouraged us to explore how traditional Indian recipes can find a place in contemporary routines.

There is a balance to maintain. Convenience should not come at the cost of character. Innovation should not erase tradition. And a brand that talks about better ingredient choices must be willing to be honest about the ingredients in every product, including the ones that require a little more explanation.
