Every few years, we discover a drink that makes us rethink what our everyday cup can be.
Mugicha might just be one of them.
Long before it became something to discover outside Japan, Mugicha had already been an everyday favourite in Japanese homes for generations.
And at TeaFit, we've been making it available since 2021.
What Exactly Is Mugicha?
Mugicha, or Japanese roasted barley tea, is made by carefully roasting barley grains and steeping them in water.
Unlike matcha, green tea or black tea, Mugicha contains no tea leaves at all.
The roasting gives it its distinctive character: a warm, toasty aroma, mild nutty flavour and smooth, clean finish.
It is naturally caffeine-free, making it gentle enough to enjoy throughout the day.
TeaFit Mugicha is made with organic roasted barley, with nothing unnecessary added.
Toasty. Roasted. Mild.
That's Mugicha.
Why Drink Mugicha?
The beauty of Mugicha is that its benefits fit effortlessly into everyday life.
Naturally Caffeine-Free
With no caffeine, Mugicha can be enjoyed in the morning, afternoon or evening without adding another stimulant to your day.
A Simple Alternative to Sugary Drinks
Mugicha has a naturally satisfying roasted flavour without needing added sugar. TeaFit Mugicha contains zero added sugar and no artificial sweeteners.
Antioxidant-Rich
Roasted barley contains naturally occurring plant compounds with antioxidant properties, which can help protect cells from oxidative stress.
Traditionally Enjoyed After Meals
Barley tea has long been enjoyed in Japan as a refreshing, light drink alongside meals. Its mild character makes it easy to sip without feeling heavy.
Easy on Your Evening Routine
Because it is caffeine-free, Mugicha can also become a comforting evening ritual when you want something flavourful without reaching for another caffeinated drink.
Japan's Everyday Brew
In Japan, Mugicha isn't reserved for special occasions.
It has been part of everyday life for generations.
Families traditionally prepare it at home and keep it chilled in the refrigerator, especially during warmer months. A cold glass of Mugicha over ice is one of the simplest ways to refresh yourself.
And that's what makes the drink so different from many beverages we think of as “special.”
Mugicha was never meant to be complicated.
It was made to be there whenever you wanted it.
At breakfast.
With lunch.
After a long day.
Or simply waiting in the fridge.
How Japan Drinks Mugicha Today
Mugicha has stayed true to its roots while fitting effortlessly into modern routines.
Hot Mugicha
For a warm, comforting cup, brew Mugicha in hot water and enjoy its deeper roasted aroma.
It's especially lovely when you want something calming without caffeine.
Iced Mugicha
For the classic refreshing experience, brew it, chill it and serve over ice.
The result is smooth, lightly nutty and incredibly refreshing.
You can also prepare a larger batch and keep it refrigerated, ready whenever you need a drink.
We've Been Selling Mugicha Since 2021
For TeaFit, Mugicha isn't a recent discovery.
We've been selling our Barlet Tea since 2021, because we believed there was something special about this simple Japanese drink long before it started attracting wider attention.
We loved that it didn't need to be dressed up.
No sugar.
No complicated ingredients.
No elaborate preparation.
Just carefully roasted barley and water.
Today, as more people look for beverages that are simpler, less sweet and more versatile, Mugicha feels particularly relevant.
Maybe that's the interesting thing about drinks.
Sometimes, what's next isn't something completely new.
Sometimes, it's something that has been quietly good for generations.
